Queen of Peace CathedralQueen of Peace CathedralQueen of Peace Cathedral was built in 1958. The 1,080-square-meter cathedral with a 55-meter-high bell tower was inaugurated on August 15, 1973.

2. Statistics

As of December 31, 2010, the diocese had 217,526 Catholics among its total population of 5,353,857. It had 126 parishes and 45 subparishes and mission stations served by 236 priests, 367 religious, 90 seminarians, 167 semianry candidates and 1,805 catechists. In a land area of 10,256 square-kilometers, the diocese covers An Giang and Kiên Giang provinces, and Thốt Nốt district of Cần Thơ City.

4. Catholic Sites

Hòn Chông Pilgrimage Center draws many Marian devotees from many places on January 1. They gather at the center to dedicate the new year to God and to pray in front of a Marian statue for peace in the country.

In 1959, Bishop Paul Nguyễn Văn Bình of Cần Thơ named Hòn Chông parish the diocese’s Marian Center. The late Catholic President Ngô Đình Diệm of South Việt Nam, who was assassinated 1963 reported1y gave the center the Marian statue.

During the war between Việt Nam and Khmer Rouge in 1979, parishioners had to move to other places and the church was ruined but the Marian statue remains standing.

Cù Lao Giêng ChurchCù Lao Giêng ChurchCù Lao Giêng Church was built in 1889 by MEP Father Augustine Gazignol. This roman-style Church is regarded as one of the oldest churches in the diocese.

Martyr Emrnanuel Lê Văn Phụng tomb lies near Cù Lao Giêng church. Saint Phụng and Father Peter Đoàn Công Quý were killed for Catholic faith in Châu Đốc on July 3l, 1859.
